From Engagement to Wedding Invitation: A Timeline for Couples
Our Sweet Day Team, February 24, 2026
The months after a proposal go quickly. Here's a practical timeline, from the engagement to the day you send your wedding invitation.
Right After the Proposal
- Tell both families in person before posting online
- Plan any formal visits or introductions between the two families, if that's part of your tradition
- Talk about the kind of wedding you want: religious or civil, city or destination, intimate or large
- Set a rough budget together
Celebrating the Engagement
Many couples hold a small engagement dinner or party with close family and friends. Keep it simple: a group message with the date, time, place and a map link is enough. Our Sweet Day is built for the wedding invitation itself, so save it for that.
Start the Guest List Early
Your engagement celebration is a good time to start the wedding guest list:
- Write down everyone you'd want there, then trim to your budget and venue capacity
- Agree with both families on how many guests each side can invite
- Ask your parents who they'd like as principal sponsors
12 to 9 Months Before the Wedding
- Book the ceremony venue and the reception
- Choose your principal sponsors and ask them personally
- Choose your entourage: best man, maid of honor, groomsmen, bridesmaids, bearers and flower girls
6 to 4 Months Before
- Choose a template on Our Sweet Day. If you're marrying away from home, Postmarked is built for destination weddings
- Create your event with your first names, date, time, ceremony venue and address
- Write your story in the Words tab, with milestones such as the day you met and the proposal
- Add the program, sponsors and entourage as they're confirmed
3 to 2 Months Before
- Add your guests and set plus-one limits
- Set your reply-by date and the date until which guests can change their reply
- Publish and send each guest their personal link
Tips for Your Story Section
- Keep it short: a few paragraphs is enough
- Use milestones for the key dates: first meeting, first trip together, the proposal
- Add a few photos from those moments to the gallery
Keep It Easy to Update
Plans change between the engagement and the wedding. With a digital invitation, a new reception time or an added sponsor is a quick edit, and guests always see the current details.
