Wet Watercolour: a christening invitation template
A sheet of cold-press paper that paints itself: drops of pigment fall, bloom and dry into flowers around the child's name, and the guest gets to paint too.
The design
The whole invitation is one long sheet of cold-press watercolour paper taped to the board, and everything on it is painted in real wet pigment: granulating in the tooth of the paper, blooming where water ran back, drying to a hard dark edge. It opens on a pencilled underdrawing; drops of colour fall onto the sheet, spread wet and glossy, and dry into a wreath of peonies, garden roses, anemones and leaves around the child's name, which a single brush pass fills with colour. Touch anywhere around the name and another drop lands and blooms where your finger was. The parents' words and the service are written in ink and graphite between the washes. The birth details sit on a wash still wet enough to take a pinch of salt: touch it and salt stars open in the pigment. The verse sits under a graded sky wash that is laid down the sheet by the scroll itself, the bead of wet paint riding its lower edge; touch the bead and it runs into drips. The godparents are swatches on a colour chart, each named like a pigment. The order of the day is a row of test swatches glazing from one colour to the next; the reception, a looser wash of its own. The dress code is a travelling paintbox: dip the brush in a pan and paint on the test strip. The photographs are painted-edge studies to slide through with a finger. Each answer is highlighted with a stroke of wash when you touch its question, the reply is answered with a fresh bloom and a spatter from the brush, and at the end the child's initial lies reserved in masking fluid under a round wash: rub it off to find the white paper beneath.

More christening templates
- The Garden Gate: A garden painted in oils as your guests walk in: the white gate swings open onto lunch under the willow, the blossom drops its petals over the godparents' bench, a robin splashes in the bird bath, and the little tree planted for your child takes everyone's ribbon.
- Meadow at Knee Height: A walk through a spring meadow at knee height: grass sways all round the words, daisies open as you reach each part, and a dandelion clock waits by the reply.
- In the Olive's Shade: A lime-washed chapel wall in an olive grove, an olive branch swaying over the child's name and its shadow moving across the whole invitation.
- Pressed in Spring: A herbarium sheet: spring flowers are laid down one by one under glassine and the specimen label types itself; guests open the flower press, look through the hand lens and lay a flower of their own.
- The Shallows: Clear, shallow sea seen from above: small fish school over rippled sand, a turtle drifts by, and the child's name floats on the surface, its shadow on the sand below.
- First Light: A valley at dawn, painted wet in watercolour as you watch: the sun dropped into a rose and gold sky, ridge behind ridge, and a butterfly resting on a painted cosmos.
- The White Rose Posy: The florist's bench on the christening morning: a white rose opens in its bud vase, and the posy is made as you read, a rose set in for each godparent.
