The Heirloom Gown: a proposal invitation template
The family christening gown on its padded hanger, lace and all, with a little paper tag on a ribbon. They turn the tag over: the question is written on the back, their name in ink.
The design
Families keep one christening gown and bring it out for every new baby. This invitation is that gown, hanging on a satin-padded hanger against the nursery wall: lawn cotton, a lace yoke, pintucks and three bands of lace insertion down a skirt as long as the page, finished in a scalloped broderie hem. A paper tag hangs from the hook on a silk ribbon, its front reading like a keepsake label: next to wear it, the baby's name and the day. Turn the tag over and the back carries the question, their name written in ink above it and your note for them beneath. Then the page is the skirt: your letter and a photograph in a lace medallion, why you in embroidered numerals, what the promise involves on the gown's sewn-in care label, the day embroidered as a monogram, a few photographs in lace roundels, and a line that makes no as easy to say as yes. They answer with one of two mother-of-pearl buttons of the same size. Yes stitches their name into the hem, beside the baby's, the way families mark who stood at the font; no stitches a sprig of white heather, for luck, all the same.

The Heirloom Gown comes in 3 colourways: Nursery blue & ivory lawn, Blush plaster & rose ribbon and Walnut wardrobe & champagne, with 2 type pairings: Linen press and Copperplate. The colours and type change in the editor at any time; the layout stays its own.

- Player Two: An arcade cabinet waiting in attract mode: "Player 2, press start". They press it, a little pixel scene plays, and the screen asks the question.
- Tick One Box: The note passed across the classroom, folded into a tight triangle with their name on it. They unfold it, read the question, and answer by ticking a box: Yes or No.
- The Corsage Box: A wrist corsage on satin in a clear florist's box, their name on the lid. Lift the lid and the ribbon tag slides out with the question and the occasion.
- Two Across: The weekend crossword, set by you for one solver. The starred clue is your question; the shaded answers are their name and the word date, and tapping them pens them in.
- Side B, Track Six: A mixtape made by hand. They open the clear case, the J-card folds out in marker and biro, and the last track on side B, ringed twice, is your question.
- Admit Two: A pair of cinema tickets, seats side by side. They tear off the stub to keep, turn it over, and the question is printed on the back.
- Par Avion: A paper plane folded from airmail paper waits on the desk with their name on the wing. One tap throws it: it loops the room, lands, and unfolds into the question.
- Four Flashes: A photo booth on a fairground at night. They press the button: the strip feeds out of the slot, the booth flashes four times, and the fourth frame is you holding up a card with the question.
