Fresh off the Line: a proposal invitation template
A tiny onesie drying on the washing line in the sun, a bib folded over its front and pegged shut. They unpeg it: the bib drops open on their name and the question, in iron-on letters.
The design
The whole invitation is a washing line on a bright morning. On the first line hangs the baby's onesie, two wooden pegs at the shoulders, with a little terry bib folded up over its front and held to the line by one more peg. On the folded bib, a woven name tape reads For and their name. Unpeg it (tap the peg, or pull it off the line) and the bib swings down open: their name, the baby's name and the role you chose for them, pressed on in glossy iron-on letters, and beside it a muslin square with your own note for them in laundry marker. Further down, the rest of the wash: the baby's photo printed onto cotton, your letter on a cot sheet, why you on a burp cloth with iron-on numbers, what the promise involves as the garment's care label, the day on a calendar tea towel, snapshots pegged in a row, a P.S. on a sewn-in label that makes no as easy as yes, and your names on a woven name tape. They answer by taking one of two identical cotton squares off the line. Yes pegs out a second tiny vest with their name and role ironed on, in a drift of soap bubbles; no pegs out a folded muslin with their name and always one of ours, warm from the sun.

- Player Two: An arcade cabinet waiting in attract mode: "Player 2, press start". They press it, a little pixel scene plays, and the screen asks the question.
- Tick One Box: The note passed across the classroom, folded into a tight triangle with their name on it. They unfold it, read the question, and answer by ticking a box: Yes or No.
- The Corsage Box: A wrist corsage on satin in a clear florist's box, their name on the lid. Lift the lid and the ribbon tag slides out with the question and the occasion.
- Two Across: The weekend crossword, set by you for one solver. The starred clue is your question; the shaded answers are their name and the word date, and tapping them pens them in.
- Side B, Track Six: A mixtape made by hand. They open the clear case, the J-card folds out in marker and biro, and the last track on side B, ringed twice, is your question.
- Admit Two: A pair of cinema tickets, seats side by side. They tear off the stub to keep, turn it over, and the question is printed on the back.
- Par Avion: A paper plane folded from airmail paper waits on the desk with their name on the wing. One tap throws it: it loops the room, lands, and unfolds into the question.
- Four Flashes: A photo booth on a fairground at night. They press the button: the strip feeds out of the slot, the booth flashes four times, and the fourth frame is you holding up a card with the question.
