Airs for the Christening: a christening invitation template
A white ballerina music box stands open in the morning light. Wind it and the little dancer turns before her mirror; scroll, and the view goes into the mirror, where the invitation is kept, while Brahms' Lullaby plays note by note as your guests read.
The design
A ballerina music box is the christening gift a child keeps for life. A real white one, its case lacquered, its tray lined in pink velvet and a mirror in its arched lid, stands open on a marble sill in morning light; the guest winds it, its first phrase plays and the dancer turns on her spring, her other side turning in the mirror. Scrolling, the view goes into the mirror until the card kept there fills the screen, and the invitation is that card: engraved in the manner of the old tune sheets, the child's name where the maker's would be, then the list of airs, each part of the day numbered and set as tune sheets set them, title, dotted leader, and on the right what a composer's name would be (the time, the place, the godparent's role). Below, the movement stays in sight: a real cylinder over its steel comb, and as the guest scrolls it turns and plucks the comb, so the lullaby plays at the speed they read and the dancer turns with it. Touch a godparent's name and the box plays them a phrase. For what to wear, the velvet bow the box was given in is re-dyed in each colour of the day. If the hosts have their own song, winding the box plays theirs instead.

- Written by Hand: A calligrapher's desk: the child's name is written live in pointed-pen copperplate, and the guest changes the nib, blots the ink, tests the colours and tries the pen.
- Lantern Hill: A papercut lightbox: watch the light come on behind the hills, tilt the box to part its paper layers, open the chapel doors and light a lantern for each godparent.
- The Star Cards: Your photographs as star cards, pierced where the stars fall: touch one and it is held up to the lamp, and the stars shine through the picture.
- The Christening Bear: An old mohair teddy in a knitted scarf sits on the nursery shelf and hands your guests the invitation one card at a time: swipe a card away and he turns to watch the next one; he tries his scarf on in the colours of the day.
