The Star Cards: a christening invitation template
Your photographs as star cards, pierced where the stars fall: touch one and it is held up to the lamp, and the stars shine through the picture.
The design
The family's photographs are mounted on cream card stock and pierced wherever the stars of a constellation fall, the way the old star cards of Urania's Mirror (1824) were made to be held up to a lamp. They lie on a walnut table at night in the pool of one lamp, a card for each part of the day. The first card carries the cover photograph and the Little Bear: the lamp comes up and the card is held to it, the pole star coming through first. Any card, touched, is lifted to the lamp: the room darkens round it, the picture glows where the lamp is behind it, and its stars come through the holes; touched again it is laid down. The service is pierced with the Northern Cross, the little one with Capella and her two Kids, and the order of the day with the Plough, which turns about the pole star like the hand of a clock: one of its stars comes through for each moment as the guest reads down. The godparents' card carries the twin stars, and each godparent has a star of their own that shines when their name is touched. The rest of the photographs are plates dealt off the top of the box; what to wear is a slip of hand-laid watercolour washes; and the reply is written on a blank card, where sending it pricks a new star that shines for the guest.
Colours and type
The Star Cards comes in 3 colourways: Lamplight on walnut, Moonlight, cool lamp and Rose lamp, late, with 2 type pairings: IM Fell & EB Garamond and Playfair capitals & Caslon. The colours and type change in the editor at any time; the layout stays its own.

- Airs for the Christening: A white ballerina music box stands open in the morning light. Wind it and the little dancer turns before her mirror; scroll, and the view goes into the mirror, where the invitation is kept, while Brahms' Lullaby plays note by note as your guests read.
- Lantern Hill: A papercut lightbox: watch the light come on behind the hills, tilt the box to part its paper layers, open the chapel doors and light a lantern for each godparent.
- The Christening Bear: An old mohair teddy in a knitted scarf sits on the nursery shelf and hands your guests the invitation one card at a time: swipe a card away and he turns to watch the next one; he tries his scarf on in the colours of the day.
