The Birthday Arcana: a birthday invitation template
A milestone birthday as a tarot reading on a velvet cloth: the birthday person as a major arcana card, a spread that turns over to reveal the hour, the place and the dress code, and a fortune for every guest.
The design
Opens on a velvet reading cloth with an engraved deck at its centre. One card is drawn out of the deck face down, held for a breath, and turned over: The Birthday, a major arcana card of our own deck, with the birthday photo in its arched window, sun rays and laurel engraved around it in gold and the age as its Roman numeral. The name settles beneath it like the title plate of the card. Below, the reading is laid out: three cards face down on stitched positions that the guest turns one by one (I The Hour, II The Place, III The Garment, its colours set as enamel stones), a crossing card for the late venue, the reader's interpretation of her life with the past laid out as a line of minor cards, the evening as a seven-card line, a card turned reversed for the adults-only rule, visions in arched frames for the photos, and questions for the cards. The reply is a blank position on the cloth: answer, and a new card turns over (The Guest, The Crossroads or The Absent Friend). It closes on the fortune: tap the deck and draw one for yourself.
