Butterfly Field Journal: a birthday invitation template
The invitation is a naturalist's field journal describing a rare new species, your child: a hand-drawn butterfly flies in and alights on the glass of their specimen mount, museum labels carry the date and place, and guests sign the register of observers.
The design
Opens on the type plate of a cloth-bound field journal: "Description of a new species", the child's name in Bodoni italic with a Latin binomial and author ("Papilio isayensis Dimaculangan, 2021"), their photo in a glazed specimen mount and a red HOLOTYPE label. A swallowtail drawn in ink and watercolour flies in along a dotted flight line and alights on the glass, then the age lands as "Fig. 6" and the typewritten locality label types in the date, time and place. Every section is another page of the journal: time until emergence on four typed labels, the story as a life history (ovum, larva, pupa, imago) with a chrysalis that ecloses when tapped, the locality and habitat, a field log for the program, notes for fellow collectors, a colour key after Werner where tapping a colour paints the specimen, the photos as pinned plates, desiderata for gifts, Notes & Queries, and the register of observers for the reply, where the red RECORDED label is pinned and the butterfly lifts off the page. Closes on Finis: next entry, turns 7.
Colours and type
Butterfly Field Journal comes in 3 colourways: Field journal, Morpho blue and Pressed rose, with 2 type pairings: Bodoni Moda & Kalam and Instrument Serif & Patrick Hand. The colours and type change in the editor at any time; the layout stays its own.
Who it suits
Made for kids, in the Themed style.

You write your own words and add your photos in the live editor, send every guest a personal link by email or any messaging app, and follow the replies as they come in.
