Fresco Under Plaster: a christening invitation template
An old chapel wall: a fresco of a May sky and olive trees comes out from under the whitewash, patch by patch, with the child's name painted in the band beneath.
The design
The whole invitation is one lime-plaster wall in a country chapel, painted in fresco and gently aged: faded azure, olive green, warm earth and the red of the painter's underdrawing, hairline cracks, and the seams where each day's patch of plaster was laid. It opens covered in whitewash; the plaster flakes away in pieces, patch by patch, until the sky and the olive grove are uncovered, the baby's portrait painted in a round medallion and the name lettered in Roman capitals on the painted band beneath. Every part of the day is painted on the same wall. A restorer's patch of plaster is left for the guest to chip away with a finger, piece by piece, with a little dust, until the dove beneath is found. A touch sends a breeze through the painted olive grove and the leaves turn silver. The baby's initial waits as a pricked cartoon: dab the pounce bag and charcoal dust comes through the holes, then the letter is painted in. The dress colours are the painter's pigments, and each one tried leaves its brushstroke on the wall. The order of the day is laid as giornate, one day's plaster at a time, drying as you scroll while a painted border runs down beside them. The photographs are frescoes lifted on canvas, peeled off one after another. A reply is signed into the plaster.
