No Two Alike: a christening invitation template
Real snow crystals, photographed one by one a century ago, fall across black velvet: touch one and it breaks along its six arms. Your photographs are printed the way those crystals were, in a dark circle on cream card.
The design
Wilson Bentley, a Vermont farmer, spent forty-six winters catching single snowflakes on a board covered in black velvet and photographing them before they melted: more than five thousand crystals, and never two alike. The invitation is his board on a snowy day. His own photographs, cut from the prints, fall across the velvet as the guest reads; touch one and it breaks cleanly along its six arms, the pieces tumbling and melting away with a small ice-glass ring. The family's photographs are printed as his prints were, a dark circle on cream card numbered in pencil, the cover developing out of the dark as the snow starts. The service is an entry in his weather notebook, in his hand. The order of the day is a crystal growing: a small six-sided plate that puts out arms as each moment is reached. Each godparent has a crystal of their own, no two alike, that turns to the light when their name is touched. The colours to wear are crystals tinted in each colour. The reply is written in the notebook; sent, a new crystal comes down and settles on the page for the guest.
