Chapel Window: a christening invitation template
A tall chapel window in leaded glass: the sun rises behind it, moves through the panes as you scroll, and lays coloured light across the page.
The design
The whole invitation is one tall arched window in a limestone chapel wall, made the way a glazier makes one: panes of clear and coloured glass held in lead, painted in dark grisaille and gold silver stain, crossed by iron saddle bars and set on a carved stone sill. It opens before dawn, dark and grey; the sun rises behind it, the colours ignite pane by pane, and the child's name appears, painted on a gold banderole beneath the photograph in its leaded roundel. As the guest scrolls, the day passes: the sun travels behind the glass from morning to evening and the window's coloured light drifts across the page, falling at last on the sill where the closing words are carved. Every section is a light of the window, framed in a border of coloured glass. The guest can touch the glass to move the sun, wipe the morning mist off the verse pane, lead each godparent's piece of glass into a small rose window around the child's initial, hold the dress colours up as faceted glass jewels that throw their colour onto the page, and swing open leaded casements to see the photographs clearly. A sunbeam walks down the order of the day as it scrolls past, and a reply is leaded into the window as its last pane.
