Masquerade Ball: a birthday invitation template
The invitation is a Venetian masked ball: a hand-gilded mask is held over her portrait until the guest lifts it, and the whole evening follows in gold leaf, from the eighteen cavaliers in their masks to the chandelier lit candle by candle.
The design
Opens on black lacquer and pleated silk. A columbina mask on its gilded baton draws itself in gold filigree, its plumes fan open from the temple and its sequins catch the light; behind it, only her eyes show through the eye-holes. The guest lifts the mask away and her portrait is revealed while her name is gilded below. Every part of the evening is an act of the ball, headed in gold leaf: the hosts' letter on an ivory libretto leaf, the invitation with a Venetian clock counting down, the programme laid in gold leaf, the 18 Roses as eighteen masked cavaliers (lift a mask and there is a rose behind it), the 18 Candles as the arms of a Murano chandelier lit one by one, the 18 Treasures as the gifts of the night, the court as pairs of masked dancers who bow when tapped, the money dance as gold ducats, the toasts as clinking goblets, her story told act by act, the dress code as satin ribbons, the photos in arched Venetian mirrors and the FAQ as the etiquette of the ball. To reply, the guest accepts by the mask: it is raised to the face and the sequins scatter. At midnight, the masks come off.
