Moana Tapa Legend: a birthday invitation template
The invitation is a long painted tapa cloth: Mini Maui, Maui's living tattoo, wakes up beside the child's photo and tells the party as a legend, one painted register at a time.
The design
Opens on a bark cloth painted in black-brown and red ochre: bands of triangles and manulua across the top, "The legend of" over the child's name in big painted letters, and the photo inside an oval tattoo ring of teeth, like the centrepiece of Maui's chest. Mini Maui is a still painted figure at its edge until he wakes, flickers through two drawn poses and lands in a flex. The rest of the cloth is divided into registers by painted bands: a countdown of painted tallies, the deeds so far in arch-topped tattoo panels (Mini Maui pointing at them), the gathering in one big arch, the order of the day marked with kupesi pictograms (Mini Maui fishing up the cake), notes for the grown-ups and the colours of the cloth as painted triangles, photos in arch panels, questions asked of the demigod, and the reply in an arch with Mini Maui arms wide. It ends with the tattoo Maui gets at the end of the film, Moana on her canoe, and "Next tattoo: Isla turns 5".
Colours and type
Moana Tapa Legend comes in 3 colourways: Ngatu, Siapo night and Hiapo pale bark, with 2 type pairings: Rubik Dirt & Kreon and Bungee & Bitter. The colours and type change in the editor at any time; the layout stays its own.
